Christmas Post

22 12 2010

one month later, and only two more days to go until christmas. A lot happened the last 4weeks, some New York City days, iPhone heavy usage etc., and i finally made my 2nd half year target today – 3.000km bike, swim, run!

So, I am looking forward spending some quietful and relaxing days at my family´s home.

See you next year

On Track … and finally iPhoner

21 11 2010

Hi there, have been busy the last two weeks, but kept my training schedule with 5times and 6,5h this week (including a 2hour Ergobike Session, 2swim sessions and a 1hour run today).

To not only talk about training, I finally decided to go for it – my brandnew iPhone4. I am a Mac-user since before my studies in early 2003, and since than would not want to miss my Apples ;-) (iBook , PowerMac, actual: MacBook Intel) But until now I always did not jump on that Smartphone thing (too expensive, what for?, I have my company phone etc. etc.). To make the story short … hell, I love this gadget!! … and phoning is just a side-effect. A full mobile office – computer (apps) – travel initiery – photo viewer – social network – weblog – productivity – toolbox (know the gadgets LED Lamp, guitar tuner etc.) – and so many more – thing.

Guess you will hear about my iPhone experience on this site in future – STEVE

Adding lanes

5 11 2010

as to my planned tri-adventures next year, I am, for two weeks now, swimming regularly twice a week trying to add some kilometers in the water. Its good fun, and training in a community bath on tuesday evening must be like in the middle of a triathlon starting crowd ;-)

Got some good advise out of the book “Vom Couchpotato zum Ironman” as well as some some Freestyle trilling tips from trinewbies.com that I am combining with lanes at slow pace, trying to improve my technique, adding about 2km per session that equal 80x25m lanes.

My equipment for swimming: Zoogs Predator googles, Speedo Endurance+ short.

so far – will go for a short GA run tomorrow morning to close my first “did as planned” training week after the September “brake”.

Flashback … Stevens Aspin

31 10 2010

07/2010 … after a weeks of thinking of buying a race bike (i had planned to ride my Mountainbike Hard Tail with slicks @ Kaindorf in the beginning), it only took a few days of looking for a suitable bike at the web and several bike magazines. To make a short story even shorter … some pics of my Stevens Aspin (3×10 Compact, XL – follow the link for tech specs):

(Pics taken at the balcony of my mothers home in Lower Austria, just before starting my first 100+km tour round the “Schneeberg”, one day after picking up the bike at Starbike Vienna an riding 60+km from Vienna to NK)

A few comments why I chose the Stevens bike:

  • Excellent reviews in several magazines and web forums
  • Very good price while having full Shimano Ultegra configuration
  • Available for test ride in XL size @ Starbike Shop
  • Nice looking ;-)

Cheers – STEVE

Trainingstagebuch.org

30 10 2010

When starting with regular training mid 2010, I was looking for the most suitable way to plan and document my sessions. As I like “playing” with Excel, I started with a custom-handmade Excel – but soon was looking for something more “web 2.0-ish”. As some of you might be aware I am a addicted Apple Mac user, which narrows down the options a bit (yes, I know that I could run either a emulation of Windows or a complete 2nd Windows system on my Intel MacBook – but I did not buy a Mac because I wanted to have running Win on it!). I finally ended up with trainingstagebuch.org in combination with gpsies.com for GPS data and mapping, but here´s what I experienced on my way there:

  • trainingpeaks WKO+: high end professional software with tons of features. Software runs locally, but – how could it not be – “WKO+ is not natively Mac OS compatible at this time.”
  • Trailrunner: Natively Mac OSX, Software runs locally. Nice OSX feel and GPS-Data / Map integration. Lacks some features when it comes to planning an statistical analysis of training data
  • trainingstagebuch.org: Browser based online tool – which means I can logon an edit from almost everywhere (having a Computer, mobile device and/or wifi connection). Lots of web 2.0 features (Sharing on facbook, twitter etc., connection other athletes, huge GPS track route community collections, planning features like target definition, Plan-Act comparison and much more, statistical analysis, seamless integration of gpsies.com and newly added upload feature directly from daum´s Ergoplanet2011)

I am using trainingstagebuch.org since July and am completely satisfied how it fulfills my needs. For more professional purposes, trainingpeaks seems to be the tool of choice.

So far – going to watch “The Flight of the Phoenix” (Original from 1965) – STEVE

Back Again … 2010

30 10 2010

Not the most frequent blogger of all times, am I ;-) More than a year has passed since I last worked on my blog, which may be excused by having focused on other things, mainly job issues during a very turbulent year 2009.

Meanwhile I advanced in my profession and also switched company in June 2010, had a very nice trip to the USA end of April (2 weeks NYC – Miami – Key West) … and I started regular cycling training since mid 2010. What happened the last months, sport-wise:

  • 04/2010: 24h “LastManStanding” Event / Vienna, Double Team, Rank 3
  • 07/2010: 24h Event / Kaindorf, Triple Team, Rank … (not to be mentioned ;-) but really great fun, i will post some pics)
  • 07/2010: New Equipment for Kaindorf – Stevens Aspin Roadbike – a real beauty, and fast like hell ;-) (if there wasn´t I as the cyclist)
  • 07-09/2010 : More than 2.000km on the road and Daum Ergo Pro … lifetime record!!
  • 10/2010: Recreational month – where (due to the decreasing temperatures I “winterized” my bike) I started running and, after a spa weekend, also swimming … and the idea finishing my first triathlon in 2011 arose
  • 25.10.2010: First Tri-day of my life – 2km swimming, 1h Ergo and 35min running (with some breaks in between)

So, that´s what´s been going on. What I am planning is to have my blog updated on a more regular basis, focusing on my tri preperations for 2011.

Nice to be back again – STEVE

My Singlespeed Bike

5 09 2009

thought I should post some pics of my Charge Plug Bike …

Singlespeed

27 07 2009

long time – no post. As we are facing “african”-heat up to 38° in Austria, there is not much opportunity for outdoor sports. Despite the thunderstorm warnings I started a trip from vienna to lower austria on my charge plug singlespeed bike last Friday. Finally, I did the 65km within 3h15min (2:51 net time) and wether stayed fine till the last few km´s, which were accompanied by a few raindrops.

On sunday I cycled back to Wr.Neustadt (20km) where we had a fine fish grill´n´chill at my sisters home before returning to vienna per train.

Fine trip – to be repeated!

Newsletter with phpList

16 06 2009

Was looking for an newsletter software, if possible open source and web-based and phpList is what I finally found. A littlebit tricky at the beginning it was then quite easy and fast sending a first test-newsletter. Just to mention the most tricky thing: After installing phpList on a Apache-mysql-php environment I first was not able to access any of the folders or files. After doing a little “googling” I found a hint of changing the folder permissions to 755 and file permissions to 644. Did this with all main folders and index.php, config.php and admin.php files and it worked out!

I will do some editing the next days and will see how easy it is to manage several lists with quite a lot of imported members.

New MacBookPros

12 06 2009

I guess everbody knows by know – on monday this week at the first day of WWDC 2009 Apple presented, besides iPone3G S, the new MacBookPros. I knew this day would come, even before I bought my new MacBook in February this year, but now I am still a littlebit “pissed”. Not that the 13″ Pro Book has that much advancements – in fact it has more or less the 13″ MacBook´s performance – but the Firewire 800 and SD-Card Slot is just what I had wished to have on my Book :-( If it really meets the 7hours battery time that would be another nice thing to have! And finally, even if its just a “status” thing – this little “Pro” following the MacBook letters is something I could pretty much live with ;-)

Somebody out there who would like to get a good priced, practically new MacBook? Contact me !
